Crazy Beautiful – Lauren Baratz-Logsted

When Lucius caused an explosion, he lost both of his arms. Instead of getting prosthetics, Lucius opted to get a cheaper alternative: hooks. At Lucius’s new school, most of the students are afraid of him. That is, except Aurora…

Aurora has just  lost her mother to cancer. Now, she must go to a new school, where her father is the librarian. Her beauty instantly puts her into the popular crowd. Jessup, the popular guy, has his eyes on Aurora from the beginning. Aurora senses something strange and sinister about him. Another boy has caught Aurora’s attention. This boy is named Lucius and has hooks for hands…

Crazy Beautiful is a modern retelling of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. Overall, Baratz-Logsted did a nice job of following the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, while also adding new elements that will keep readers entertained. One new thing that Baratz-Logsted put in the novel was Misty. Misty is Lucius’s younger sister. She added a nice mix into the group of characters. The novel is separated in two point-of-views: Lucius’s and Aurora’s. The two sections are as different as a beauty and a beast. Baratz-Logsted did a great job with the sections, and they are my favorite part of the book.

The novel read very much like a fairy tale. This can be good or bad depending on who you are. For me, this was a bad thing. I felt that Lucius and Aurora were both under-developed. Because Lucius’s backstory is never told in complete detail, he did not seem like a beast. Instead, he seemed like a nice guy. Aurora was a flat character. There was nothing interesting about her. The ending also felt rushed. It was definitely one of those “and they lived happily ever after” endings, which in itself would not be a bad thing, but because the story lacked depth, I did not enjoy the “happily ever after” ending.

Crazy Beautiful is a decent retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Fans of the fairy tale will not want to miss this novel.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about this book. The fact that it’s a retelling of Beauty and the Beast really interests me, so I think I’ll check it out at some point. Thanks for sharing a bit about the book!
